What happened

A regional library in West Garfield Park has added something unusual to its shelves and services: a full-service food pantry. Chicago Public Library and the Greater Chicago Food Depository opened the program at Legler Regional Library after a 2025 soft launch.

The pantry distributes a rotating mix of produce, protein, dairy, and other staples. It operates inside a place that residents may already visit for books, internet access, youth programming, and community support.

Why it matters

Locating food assistance inside a library can reduce one practical barrier: having to find and navigate a separate service system. The library describes Legler as a neighborhood hub, and the pantry’s early use suggests families are willing to use the model.

The design also puts services near one another. During pantry hours, partner organizations have offered children’s books, hygiene supplies, diabetes education, and healthy-living information. That does not make the library a replacement for a grocery store or a broad safety net, but it can make help easier to encounter.

What this does not prove

  • The household counts come from the organizations operating the program; Good News IRL has not independently audited them.
  • The published estimate does not say how many households are unique or how often the same families return.
  • One pantry operating limited weekly hours cannot by itself resolve the larger food-access gap in East and West Garfield Park.
